Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries (2004)

I finally succumbed to all the pressure about this show being second to none and checked out the miniseries. For the most part, it was pretty good. But it still feels like a television show, mostly in the way dramatic queues are framed around commercial breaks. It’s also great to see a show commit to such a particular representation of technology in the future. I suspect they were going for a more “realistic” approach with all the thrusters and what not. And I found Edward James Olmos’ lethargic performance to be pretty engaging, but a lot of it did come off as rather amateurish, in so much as the first episode of The Sopranos struggles to find a tone, a look, a philosophy (that scene with the AK-47 and Meadow is trying to sneak into the house always comes to mind).

Someday I’ll check out the rest, but in the mean time, I’d rather watch Deadwood or The Wire again.
